Cool DudeI love yoga because when I do it, I feel like I can think better, and in my heart I feel really quiet.  Quiet and happy and peaceful.

The benefits of yoga reach way beyond the actual class itself.  My son, Cadence, was beginning to get a bit impatient with me one day, as I was busy with something and could not help him immediately.  I said that I would be done soon, and that when I was done I could help him, and I requested him to use his patience.

He looked at me and began using a technique taught to him at yoga, and repeatedly chanted the word 'patience' while doing the action to match the word.  He did that until I was done what I was doing, and then said "I learned that in yoga!  It helps with patience!"  I was amazed.  He had not previously shown me the move, so it was new to me, and then we practiced it together.  Since then, if “I” start to get impatient, he is quick to say, "Remember, mom, patience."

Thank you, Maalaa.  The teachings of yoga will truly last a lifetime.  It is also a testament to the notion that we have as much to learn from our children as they have to learn from us.

Yogo24 was like a breath of fresh air to me.  Maalaa was inspirational to many of my grade seven students.  They picked up on her energy and embraced it.  Watching the students sing, take on yoga positions, staying focussed, controlling their breathing, standing tall and proud gave me a smile that lasted for hours. Yogo24 was uplifting, exciting, and had an unusual high to it.

This past November, Carisbrooke Elementary School participated with the BC Yoga4Kids Society and UNICEF in a fun, unique fitness and fundraising opportunity.  Imagine 225 students, from grades 1 through 6, with their teachers and many parents, practising yoga in the school gym all together.  Now consider that each child has donated a loonie and each adult a toonie as their contribution to the "Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS" campaign.  This was a wonderful opportunity to help create a new generation of active, compassionate world citizens.

At McBride Annex, we were very fortunate to have participated in yogo24.  We found the program especially useful for our highly active primary students.  We are hoping to have longer sessions for our students this coming school year to meet one of our school growth plan goals to foster physical activity.  We, at McBride feel that yoga is an integral component to developing healthy life skills.
